The Falls of The Ohio Photos

The Falls of the Ohio are about a mile from the Howard Steamboat Museum in Jeffersonville, Ind., where James V. Swift and I went May 18 and 19 to attend the 10th annual Chautauqua. (See B&B Vol. 2 Issue 3) Our schedule permitted us time for a quick visit to the nearby Falls of the Ohio. High water on the Ohio River pretty much concealed the normally dramatic view.

The attraction is part of Falls of the Ohio State Park, which also includes an interpretive center. Under the existing river conditions, the center was the only part of the attraction we visited.

As one approaches the destination, he first sees the dam and (in this case) the wall that separates the falls from the regular channel. Drift was so heavy that the dam was barely visible on the Falls side. The dam’s gates, of course, could be clearly seen more toward the main channel. This might be a good location for pictures, but not on the day of our visit. The picture we took at this spot, as others we took of the river itself, reveal the many trees that should not normally be peering up at us out of the river.

Advancing up the road we came to the beautiful Falls of the Ohio Interpretive Center. It was closed because of our early arrival, but you take what you can get. We moved around to the parking lot and snapped a few pictures for your viewing pleasure.

  • DAM ABOVE FALLS OF THE OHIO - The level of the Ohio River was so high (May 19, 2002) that what might otherwise have been dramatic was not. Drift nearly hides the near side of the dam. In the distance one can see the river wall that separates the Falls from the river channel. Posted by B&B.

  • HIGH WATER MARK - Author James V. Swift stands beside sidewalk lettering that shows the high water mark for the 1997 flood. This is up on the sidewalk leading to the Interpretive Center. Posted by B&B.
  • WELCOME SIGN - This sign to welcome visitors to the Falls of the Ohio Interpretive Center warns: No Swimming - Fossil and Rock Collecting Prohibited. Posted by B&B.
  • OVERLOOK - From the Falls of the Ohio Interpretive Center overlook (May 19, 2002), author James V. Swift looks out to where the Falls should normally provide a dramatic view. Instead he sees only bush and tree tops peering out of the depths of the Ohio River. One can see the riverine wall leading from the dam, separating the Falls from the river channel. Posted by B&B.
  • THE WIDOW'S WALK - This vintage house, located near the Falls of the Ohio, has been turned into a very attractive ice cream parlor. Posted by B&B.
  • VIEW OF LOUISVILLE, KY. - A view of Louisville, taken May 19, 2002, from a riverside park along the Ohio River between the Falls of the Ohio and Jeffersonville, Ind. The beautiful skyline of Louisville was also very attractive as seen late at night from our Ramada Inn room on the second floor deck outside the Maracas restaurant. All of Louisville was aglow and what appears in daylight as a white dome is brightly lighted at night. Posted by B&B.
  • VIEW OF LOUISVILLE AT NIGHT - This shot was taken from the Ramada Inn in Jeffersonville, Ind., on May 19, 2002, merely to show how the skyline looked to us at night. Posted by B&B.
