GIWW Houseboat Cruise - Yates/Waller

  • In August 2002, Capt. Tom Waller and Capt. Jeffrey L. Yates launched the houseboat PRETTY PENNY on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway about 12 miles below Port Allen Lock. It was the beginning of a 300-mile cruise on Capt. Waller’s boat. Copyright Capt. Jeffrey L. Yates.

  • The GIWW cruise underway, Capt. Tom Waller relaxes aboard the PRETTY PENNY. He is steering by remote control (device in hand). Copyright Capt. Jeffrey L. Yates.

  • Holding down the other side of the PRETTY PENNY was Capt. Jeffrey L. Yates, who is keeping his binoculars at the ready. Copyright Capt. Jeffrey L. Yates.

  • We don’t know who washed the bottles on this GIWW cruise, but Capt. Tom Waller was the master cook. Taken aboard the houseboat PRETTY PENNY, August 2002. Copyright Capt. Yates didn’t get to wear a crown, but he said they ate like kings, thanks to Tom’s culinary skills. Capt. Jeffrey L. Yates.

  • Security along the GIWW was tight, and Capt. Tom Waller, left, had to show his papers to a deputy sheriff and the Coast Guard. August 2002. Copyright Capt. Jeffrey L. Yates.

  • Advancing from the rear, U.S. Fish & Wildlife officers approached the PRETTY PENNY from the stern and questioned Capt. Jeffrey L. Yates, in white hat, and Capt. Tom Waller. A Coastie was kind enough to snap the shutter on Jeff’s camera. All questions answered, they proceeded on the GIWW. Copyright Capt. Jeffrey L. Yates.

  • Almost a thing of beauty, this peaceful-looking GIWW gator looks like he is contemplating his next meal. And he’s probably not particular whether it's a warm body or a sacrificial piece of bacon thrown from the houseboat PRETTY PENNY. Copyright Capt. Jeffrey L. Yates.

  • This GIWW gator was caught by surprise when a free lunch of bacon landed on his snout. It was the final night of the GIWW cruise for Capts. Waller and Yates. Copyright Capt. Jeffrey L. Yates.

  • This picture of the PRETTY PENNY was shot at 52 Mile Bend. Capt. Tom Waller and Capt. Jeffrey L. Yates spent their last night there and were entertained by free-loading alligators. It was on the morning of the last day of the 300-mile GIWW cruise. Copyright Capt. Jeffrey L. Yates.

  • Ootoma Ben Waller. Cartoon by Norbert Reaux, an associate of Thomas Waller, showing what the PRETTY PENNY and Waller must have looked like to Coast Guard officials in charge of homeland security along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. Waller, Jeff Yates and the PRETTY PENNY had dallied a little too long in the neighborhood of a chemical plant and the cavalry showed up. The 300-mile cruise took place in August.
