Hannibal, Missouri Photos

Finding someone who has not read books by Mark Twain would be rare. Many, however, have not visited Hannibal, Mo., where Samuel Clemens made his home and ultimately created what today powers a continuing economic boom of sorts for that Mississippi River town.

I snapped a few pictures of famous Hannibal landmarks (and some not particularly famous) that provide a smattering of the ambiance of Mark Twain land. Many have appeared on postcards. They could be new to some readers who have never ventured to Hannibal.

The 13 views provided here are all within a small radius within walking distance of about one city block between the two most distant sites. These are but a few of the many places to enjoy in Hannibal.

  • MARK TWAIN BOYHOOD HOME - The white building is the authentically restored boyhood home of Mark Twain, available for tours. The stone building at left houses the Mark Twain Museum & Gift Shop. The fence at right represents the fence Tom Sawyer "let" his boyhood friends whitewash. Posted by B&B.

  • BECKY THATCHER HOUSE - Becky Thatcher was Tom Sawyer's first sweetheart in Mark Twain's book "Tom Sawyer." A strategically located sign tells us that "Tom thought Becky to be the essence of all that is charming in womanhood." Visitation to the house is free. Posted by B&B.
  • THATCHER HOUSE SIGN tells about the furnishings of the home and invites guests to visit free of charge. Posted by B&B.
  • This building, for want of a better description, houses the operations of J. M. CLEMENS, JUSTICE OF THE PEACE. It is located just across the street from the Mark Twain Home and Museum. Posted by B&B.
  • CARDIFF HILL - This is the foot of Cardiff Hill, made famous in Mark Twain's books. Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are prominently displayed in bronze. Posted by B&B.

In addition to its wide variety of items for sale, it has for your viewing pleasure the Tom Sawyer Dioramas - 16 miniature carved views of scenes from the Tom Sawyer adventure era.
