- Now this is getting scary folks! Once again here is the St. Paul just clearing the Keokuk & Hamilton R.R. Bridge and about to enter Lock 19 while docking drill boats at the same time. Lock 19, both old and new, are built on solid lime rock, but because there were humps, the Corps of Engineers needed to use their steam powered drill boats to drill and then set dynamite or nitro into the drilled holes and blast out some of this rock. This was where the light draft towboat, EMILY, did the job of setting them in the proper place and she also towed the quarter boats, which are spotted at the stern of the EMILY and moored to a floating boom right alongside the C.B. & Q. Railroad Tracks. SO MUCH FOR A GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP! You might have noticed the large megaphone mounted atop the pilothouse for the pilot to answer back to the "Roof Captain" when making the lock and landings! John Miller, Photo.
