  • The 140 by 4- foot F. P. Thomas (#47-21), 6,140 hp., was photographed moving northbound at Mile 247 on the Illinois Waterway near Marseilles, Ill., on May 1, 1975. She is in the Marseilles Canal, just above the Marseilles Lock. Copyright Capt. Jeffrey L. Yates.
  • The Falls of the Ohio are about a mile from the Howard Steamboat Museum in Jeffersonville, Ind., where James V. Swift and I went May 18 and 19 to attend the 10th annual Chautauqua. (See B&B Vol. 2 Issue 3) Our schedule permitted us time for a quick visit to the nearby Falls of the Ohio. High water on the Ohio River pretty much concealed the normally dramatic view.
  • The Mv. Fife, shown here around 1986, was a tender for the Vicksburg Engineer District's Mat Sinking Unit. The Fife was taken out of service some time shortly after this, replaced by the Mv. Harrison. The Fife lingered on for many years in Vicksburg (Miss.) harbor, but creeping neglect took its toll, and several years have now passed since the last time I saw it there. I do not know its present whereabouts or even if it is still afloat. Copyright William Steel.

The m/v Fife was bought from the Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District by Patton Tully Co. and was then purchased by Ergon Marine of Vicksburg in 1999 after a fleet was purchased and it was included. It was never operated, however. It was sold in 2000 to Mike's, Inc. in Wood River, Illinois. As far as I know, that it where it still is. - Rusty Goodwin, Maintenance Planner, Magnolia Marine Transport (12/11/03)

  • The car carrier Forens is passing Duisburg, downbound to unload its cargo of about 600 new-built export cars at a seaport on the Rhine. The 2000-built container vessel was rebuilt to a car carrier in 2005; originally, it had a maximum cargo capacity of 4,200 tons and was able to tow a barge. The Forens has dimensions of 613 by 37 feet, twin screws and develops 2,000 hp. Copyright Ingo Steller, Duesseldorf, Germany.

  • Mv. Forward, in this late 1970s picture, was owned by Hillman Transportation. She was operated by Consolidation Coal Co. during most of the time that she was on the Monongahela River before being sold in November 1978 to Energy Transportation Company. • Four towboats just off the Coast Guard Dock, Keokuk, Ia., in December 1984:
Pegasus, Spartan Trans., tied off to dock; Starfire, Wisconsin Barge Line; Renee G., Alter Barge Line; and White Dawn, Agri Trans. They were making several "ice lockings", so they just decided to sit tight until they could all lock back up together. Isn't winter time just grand!!! Courtesy of John Miller.
  • This is the Fox somewhere on the Illinois River on a hot summer day and dredging is taking place while the Fox is on standby to move the dipper dredge when needed or to spot a barge to place the dredge spoil in. If you look on the bank and look where the engineroom door is open, you will see a young man in his coveralls looking over this towboat, wondering if he might get invited aboard or even get a job for that matter. This is the only known photo of the Fox and I found this original photo clear out in Utah, a LONG WAY from the Mississppi or Illinois Rivers! This is the boat that in 1920 was valued at a mere $400.00. What a bargain, too! John Miller, Photo.

Mississippi Valley Barge Line, Valley Line) was the first private barge line other than Federal and was started in 1929, what a sad ending to a long running barge line. Copyright John Robert Miller.
  • Mv. Frank C. Rand, photographed on July 31, 2002, at Savanna, Ill., a day or two after having been towed there from Portage des Sioux, Mo., where it had been moored for years at Venetian Harbor. Plans call for the Rand to move up to about UMR Mile 538, then head up the small boat dredged channel (too shallow for the Rand at present)to a commercial operation on Millers Lake, about a half mile from the main river. It is understood that the developer wants to make the boat into a "floating steak house."
