He was leaving the harbor with loaded barges, coming up on the "Cross Roads," considered the world’s busiest intersection. The ship needed a tug assist its turn down into the Galveston Harbor area.   • Mv. Gambler, ex Mack Gamble, photographed on August 10, 2000, at East Liverpool, Ohio. "It is probably the last photo I will ever take at my old hometown," says photographer Dan Owen.
  • Gate Assembled - This is the "assembled" spare mitre gate that was placed in its gate recess at Mississippi River Lock 19 on January 12, 2003. The gates are in two pieces and must be assembled. This is the East Leaf and is placed on the riverside wall. "We think changing a tire is a chore," writes John Miller. "Just imagine doing this?" The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to dewater the lock chamber again this year. Copyright John Robert Miller.
  • Original Mitre Gate - Work on the lower mitre gates at Mississippi River Lock 19 is moving right along. This photo was taken from the Old Highway Bridge on January 11, 2003, and shows the original gates. The gates tower above the old bridge, and you can see the supports as well as the turnbuckles at (at the bottom of the photo) that hold them in place. The gates were pulled in December 2002. The original gates had not been pulled since the lock was completed in 1957. Copyright John Robert Miller.
  • Swinging The Gate - The floating crane Quad Cities lifted the spare gate and swung it downstream where it was set on two "pillow blocks" and then, with the use of chains and turnbuckles, was secured until it was placed into the gate recess on January 12, 2003. Photographer John Miller wrote, "The Quad Cities swung this around as if it were made of cardboard and set her down right on the pillow blocks. You’ve got to admire the fellows that do this and make it look so easy." Copyright John Robert Miller.

  • Gator No. 1 - Pet gator photographed around 1985-86 from the Mv. Texaco Marrero on the Sabine-Neches River, Beaumont, Texas, at the Fina refineries dock. When the dock man whistled, the gator swam straight across the river to be fed. He looks mighty hungry! The crew fed him shrimp and steaks. Copyright Richard Rodgers.

  • Ghost Tow -- Sometimes conditions are not ideal for photography, and yet they produce some very interesting pictures such as this one of an unknown towboat, taken by Craig Nowack on October 11, 2002, on the Mississippi River above Dubuque, Iowa. Craig said, "I've always considered towboats at night to be almost surreal, and even though they move slowly, they’re still hard to capture in a still image." Copyright Craig Nowack.

  • The Golden Eagle (2) is a Str. Golden Eagle postcard scan. The card, issued by the now defunct Eagle Boat Store Co. of St. Louis, was post-marked March 18, 1948, and offers tours from St. Louis on the Gordon C. Greene.   • The Golden Fleece was a movie name given to the Gordon C. Greene at some point during her career. We have no photographer ID or date, but were looking for information. (The genuine Golden Fleece, a sternwheel wooden hulled packet, was constructed in Paducah, Ky., in 1913 and ran in the Paducah-Golconda trade. She went to Pittsburgh in 1919. Later she was turned into a towboat and renamed Julia O'Sullivan and Frank Woods.) Posted by John Fryant.
  • The Goldenrod Showboat, shown on the St. Louis riverfront in this picture published in "The Waterways Journal" on July 2, 1983. In January 2003, the vessel was still owned by St. Charles, Mo., which has been trying to sell it. It has been indicated that it might be donated to an Illinois entity. (Check our B&B archives.)   • The Gravel Gertie (remember the old Dick Tracy comic strip character?) was originally the Corps of Engineers’ Gouverneur, used on the Illinois River. She was built in 1926 by Howard Ship Yard and Dock Co., Jeffersonville, Ind., measured 121.7 x 23 and had Winton diesels. She was repowered in 1949 to have 350 hp. The vessel was sold in 1946 to Material Service Corp., Chicago. They added a retractable pilothouse in 1949 and changed the name to Gravel Gertie.     Ice Skating - This is a photo of a picture of ice skating on the Bonpas was taken from the Bonpas iron bridge completed at the end of 1985. In the background are the old wood trestles that remain from the original wooden bridge. The picture, which was on display at The Oaks, just off Highway 64 near Grayville, Ill., is part of a small collection of historic scenes. Anyone in the vicinity would find it worthwhile to stop for a few minutes to see them. The picture may have come from the "Mercury Independent." Posted by B&B.
