- The operator's position on the Mv. Joe Swank -- not too shabby for a Home-built project. Copyright William Steel.
- This view of the Mv. Joe Swank was taken around 1986. It actually started out as a bolted fuel barge built in the 1920s. The men working at the Bank Grading Unit in Greenville, Miss., added engines and a steering platform mounted on stilts above the deck. Later the full housework was added, bigger engines installed, and suddenly the BGU had a boat! The extended front deck was big enough to carry a ton and a half truck, something I did several times when I was operating it. Copyright William Steel.
- This picture of the Mv. Joe Swank was taken around 1986 when it was assigned to the Vicksburg Engineer District Bank Grading Unit, based in Greenville, Miss. That facility is now closed; the boat has been transferred to the Memphis District and is presently stationed at Ensley Engineer Yard in McKellar Lake at Memphis. One of the Swank’s operators was Bill Steel, who took this picture. The Bank Grading Unit used it as a catch-all tender, moving whatever needed moving when the dragline grader Odum was working the riverbanks in preparation for sinking mat on them. This is one of the typical tow combinations which have replaced towboats; some of these pushing motorships are allowed to carry three barges. - The John Craig, sternwheel ferry, located on the Kentucky River at Valley View, Ky. Photographed by Jim Wilkins of the Lexington-Fayette Urgan County Government in September 2004. The Valley View Ferry is the oldest business in Kentucky, having been established in 1785, prior to Kentucky¹s statehood. The ferry's original charter was signed by Virginia Gov. Patrick Henry and it has received special permission from the Kentucky and Virginia state governments to fly the flags of both states. It is perhaps the only commercial watercraft in the U.S. that can officially fly two state flags. Its route connects Fayette and Jessamine counties on the Kentucky River's north bank and Madison County on the south bank. The ferry is a free service funded by the governments of Fayette, Jessamine and Madison counties, and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. It is located on Tates Creek Road (KY Rt. 169). - From Dreux – France we have four pictures (#2, 3, 7 and 26) of the pusher boat Juin, on which the photographer works as a professional navigator. The boat is 10 meters (30 feet) in length and 5 meters (15 feet) broad. It is being driven by two Detroit Diesel 170-hp. Engines. The vessel was built in 1962 in Thomery, France. It was initially used for the harbour operation. In 1980 it was brought by our school for the training of future sailors. We usually work with one or two barges of 40 meters (120 feet). The training of pupils is alternated, one week per month at the school, then three weeks in the company of navigation. Copyright Francois Manouvrier, Dreux – France.

- A mystery boat. Don't know how it was accomplished, but some anonymous he/she sent us this picture of a boat and a challenge for B&B readers to identify it. The only clue is that it was photographed on the lower Mississippi. Answer: The pilothouse was from the Justin T. Rogers and the main deck from the Betty Brent. The boat's name, by the way, is Justin T. Rogers.
