  • Photo (1) of dragline Odum, based in Greenville, Miss., working for the Vicksburg Engineer District, grading the riverbank prior to the sinking of stabilization mat. The photograph was taken cerca 1986. All of the Greenville plant was transferred to the Memphis District in the early 1990s, said photographer Bill Steel, and in July 1997, while in tow northbound, the Odum’s boom struck the Hwy. 49 bridge at Helena, Ark., and collapsed onto the tow barges. It was never repaired, and in 2003 the Corps sold the Odum and its machine barge as salvage. The 400-foot stringout barge was kept in service, and today it is a component of the one remaining bank grader based in Memphis. Copyright William Steel.

  • This photo was taken on March 5, 2002, looking straight across the Missouri River into what is known as "Old Franklin," Mo. The original community was located in the bottoms but floods destroyed the town, so the community moved several miles back to the bluffs. If you look in the upper right hand corner, you can see the blue water tower which is where Franklin, Mo., is now located. There were plenty of sandbars and dikes out for air and virtually no flow on the Missouri what so ever. Copyright by John Miller.

  • This photo of the Andre Ledoux was photographed on November 5, 1971, at St. Louis Ship in St. Louis, Mo. Photographer Dan Owen said that the day was dreary, overcast and bad for photographing almost anything outside. As luck would have it, as he rode out on the river on one of St. Louis Ship's small towboats to take the picture, a ray of sun popped out right on the boat. He said he didn't like the background particularly but he shot it anyway. St. Louis Ship liked the photo so much that they used it for several years in full-page advertisements. It was titled "Stand Out." The brand new white paint did make the boat stand out. The Andre Ledoux later became the Orleanian. Copyright by Dan Owen. Courtesy Boat Photo Museum.

  • American Commercial Barge Line’s Mv. Orleanian has shoved into the bank to allow Camas' Calvin J. Steward to pass downbound on its way to Grey Cloud Island on the Upper Mississippi River. • Out Draft -- For those of you who have been to a lock and noticed this sign placed at the end of the upper guide wall, this is the “Out Draft” sign which is used when several gates, or in this case all the gates on the dam, are up. The sign is angled out and the amber light is turned on to notify the towboats of a strong pull from the current. This out draft sign is located at Lock 21, Quincy, Ill., and all the gates are open meaning open river. and the river is “Hot”. Copyright John Miller.
